What is arthritis?

Arthritis is often referred to as a single disease. In fact, it is an umbrella term for more than 100 medical conditions that affect the musculoskeletal system, specifically joints where two or more bones meet.

Arthritis-related problems include pain, stiffness, inflammation and damage to joint cartilage (the tissue that covers the ends of bones, enabling them to move against each another) and surrounding structures. This can result in joint weakness, instability and deformities that can interfere with the most basic daily tasks such as walking, driving a car and preparing food.

Arthritis is the major cause of disability and chronic pain in Australia, with 3.85million Australians affected at a cost to our economy of more than $23.9 billion each year in medical care and indirect costs such as loss of earnings and lost production. As the population ages, the number of people with arthritis is growing. According to leading researcher Access Economics, current trends suggest that, by 2050, 7 million Australians will suffer from some form of arthritis.
There is a widely held belief that arthritis is simply a consequence of age, the pain of growing old. But it is not a natural part of ageing. In fact 2.4 million of all people suffering from the disease are of working age. Research suggests that early intervention can delay the onset of the disease and may reduce the number of cases of osteoarthritis by about 500,000 within 15 years.

While there are about 100 forms of arthritis, the three most significant - osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and gout - account for more than 95 per cent of cases in Australia. Arthritis is not yet curable. While the condition is usually manageable, it invariably impacts on a patient's quality of life and includes varying degrees of discomfort and pain.

10 Tips for more energy everyday,




Unless you're like 20 years of age or younger, I'm sure you'd agree with me that it would be great to have more energy...

Follow these 10 steps and you’re sure to feel less stressed and more energetic in no time at all.

1. Keep your bedroom pitch black when you sleep. When you remove all light stimulus (even from a clock or nightlight,) you get better REM sleep which leaves you feeling more rested. If you can’t make your room dark, wear an eye mask.

2. Drink a glass of lemon water as soon as you wake up. This helps the body alkalize, helping everything from digestion to immune function.

3. Do some form of morning meditation or prayer. This will actually help you keep your thoughts clear during the day and you will get better rest later that night.

4. Eat protein for breakfast. Eggs in the morning, for example, will give you more sustained energy than that bagel, muffin or croissant. It really doesn’t take too long to scramble an egg and the concerns about eggs and cholesterol are disproven.

5. Move your body mid-day. If you can’t get a workout in, run up the stairs a few times, do ten pushups or a couple downward-dogs (it’s a yoga move!) or a few jumping jacks. Movement is life. If you’re not moving, you’re degenerating. Sitting at a computer all day (or in a car commuting) zaps your energy. Find a way to move!

6. Get your laptop computer set up ergonomically. This might mean buying a separate keyboard and mouse so when you type your elbows can stay close to your body. Set the computer on a stand so that the screen is level with your eyes. This helps with elbow pain, neck strain and overall energy.

7. Cut the chemical junk out of your diet. Stay away from processed sugars and flours. These empty calories often just get wrapped in mucous in your body and stored as fat. If you don’t know what the ingredient is on the label (or can’t pronounce it,) then it’s better to just not eat it.

8. Learn to prepare greens. Dark leafy greens like kale and chard are some of the most energy producing nutrient-rich foods you can eat. Make them a regular part of your diet.

9. Keep your nerve system clear. A healthy spine and nerve system keeps the messages between your brain and body from being disrupted. Regular wellness chiropractic is a great tool for keeping energy high and the body healthy.

10. Go to bed on time. Getting to sleep early (by 10:30pm at the latest) maximizes the healing quality of sleep. Sleeping from 10pm to 5am for example, will yield more healing and energy than going to bed past midnight and sleeping until noon. Going to bed early and getting up early is a smart way to efficiently create health.

Eating Mindfully

How many times do you sit down in front of the TV or your laptop and before you know it you haven`t eaten anything?

Today`s busy schedules mean that for many of us, sitting down to a well prepared meal at a table and taking the time to savor every mouthful rarely, if ever, happens.

Eating mindlessly could lead to bad habits and weight gain, but there is a solution.

`Mindful Eating` encourages you to be aware of what you are eating so you will automatically make health choices. Mindfulness has it`s roots in Buddhism and is being recognised as one of the keys to maintaining a healthy lifestyle.  Eating mindfully means paying attention to the food that you eat - the taste, texture and aroma.

Living a fast paced lifestyle means food often becomes a reward, a punishment or merely fuel. Being busy can lead people to miss meals during the day, which makes them too hungry later on, so they overeat.

There are no `good` and `bad` foods, just some have more health benefits than others.

The positive effects of mindful eating can spill over into other areas of your life. Reasearch published in the Journal of American Dietetic Association found regular yoga practice can help prevent weight gain in middle age.

  • Play relaxing music while you eat if you are not used to total silence.
  • Plate your food up attractively, paying attention to portion size.  Make sure a quarter carbohydrates and half salad or vegetables.
  • Learn to recognise what hunger really fees like and how it feel to be pleasantly satisfied, not FULL.
  • Concentrate on eating slowly and chew your food well.
  • Make sure you savour every mouthful and really taste what you are eating.
  • Be conscious of the food you eat and how it affects your body.  Choose good quality produce.
  • Feel your fullness.  eating slowly can help your stomach let you know when you have had enough.
 Paying respect and attention to how you nourish yourself is what your body deserves.

A high fibre diet (approximately 30-40g per day) reduces your risk of chronic disease such as diabetes, heart disease and some types of cancer. It is also a great way to help you feel full quicker and lose weight. Fibre acts like a sponge and soaks up sugar in the foods you eat, and releases it slowly, helping control blood sugar levels. It also reduces cholesterol absorption and excretion, therefore reducing your blood cholesterol and your risk of heart disease.
